Chart notes
RUSSIAN TO WIN in contention early, gradually altered in trying to keep a clear path on the backstretch, waited for room just off the rail into the bend, squeezed through two wide nearing the end of a half mile, floated out some as he took the advantage into the lane, drew clear upper stretch, was all out the final furlong and kept STROPE at bay. STROPE soon trailed from inside, came off the rail for a clear path at the half mile marker, also waited for room on the turn, got through two wide entering the stretch, edged ahead for second, loomed a serious threat inside RUSSIAN TO WIN inside the last eighth, hung through the late going but was easily best of the rest. ST. LOUIE LOUIE in tight briefly at the start, was an early factor while toward the outside, vied for the lead three wide on the turn, gradually angled out to stay clear of GIMME THE CANDY approaching the quarter pole, came five wide into the stretch, was no match for the top pair but pulled away for third the final furlong. GIMME THE CANDY prominent between rivals, went for the lead just outside LAYTON THE DAY on the bend, started to fan out some near the end of a half mile and gave way for the drive. MAJOR CONTENDER forwardly placed from outside on the backstretch, faded four wide before finishing a half mile. LAYTON THE DAY broke alertly, gradually angled in on the backstretch, began to tire along the rail nearing the end of four furlongs and continued to fade through the stretch.
