Chart notes
SAND DEVIL was hustled to the front then well rated while setting the pace on the inside of a foe, dropped to the rail early on the turn, responded well when asked near the quarter-pole, came outward while being headed into upper stretch, fought back gamely to regain the advantage under a right-handed crop approaching the sixteenth-pole, dueled with the runner-up to the finish and determinedly prevailed. NATIONAL IDENTITY stalked the pace on the outside then in the three path on the turn, was given his cue while taking a short lead into upper stretch, battled with the winner under a drive into the final furlong, lost the advantage back to that foe nearing the sixteenth-pole, fought on gamely to the finish and was denied while well clear for the place. SOONTOBEKING moved out while hustled early then was carried back in, moved out again near the three-quarter pole, advanced closer with five furlongs to run, was urged in the two to three path for most of the turn then shifted to the four path and earned the place while no match for the top two. FIREBALLIN broke a step slow while corrected with the right-rein, was guided in early then rated just off the pace, moved from the rail to the three path while roused intermittently on the turn, turned into the stretch under a drive and came up empty. JUST LICORICE broke a step slow then bobbled after the break, settled on the outside, moved closer with five furlongs to run, was roused in the four path on the turn, moved to the five path late on that bend and failed to respond.
