BAEZA stalked four wide into the first turn then angled to the two path, applied pressure from outside at the three-quarter pole, lost touch with FLYIN PRIVATE briefly on the backstretch then drew alongside once again at the half-mile marker, took over inside the three-eighths pole, put FLYIN PRIVATE away midway around the bend while under pressure from WESTWOOD, disposed of that rival late on the turn, kicked clear in upper stretch, drifted in when asked right handed midstretch and drew off under hand urging. MELLENCAMP tracked from inside into the first turn, had to alter out from behind VARNEY at the seven-eighths pole, moved back inside, stalked the top pair up the backstretch, went outside a rival on the far turn then cut the corner into the lane, finished willingly to earn the place honors but was no match for the winner. WESTWOOD chased five wide outside a rival into the first turn then angled to the three path, bid three deep with three furlongs remaining, could not keep up with BAEZA approaching the stretch and got outkicked by MELLEN CAMP for second. RANK settled in the two path early, had to alter out a bit at the seven-eighths pole then came back to the two path, chased three deep at the quarter pole, asked right hand entering the lane and faded. FLYIN PRIVATE coaxed to the front and led outside VARNEY into the first turn, cleared that rival and moved over to the rail, took pressure from BAEZA at the three-quarter pole, cleared that rival briefly before being confronted once again, relinquished the lead past the three-eighths pole, trailed into the stretch and tired. VARNEY raced up close on the inside into the first turn, shifted out and lost his action at the seven-eighths pole, was taken hold of and pulled up around the turn and walked off. THERE WAS A STEWARDS' INQUIRY INVOLVING VARNEY ON THE FIRST TURN AND RULED THAT HE CAUSED HIS OWN PROBLEMS AND NO CHANGE WOULD BE MADE.
