FATHER DELAY stepped to the front in the two path then moved inside, headed by SHORTMAN on the backstretch, inched ahead on the far turn before being headed again, battled into the final furlong, drifted out and brushed SHORTMAN at the sixteenth pole and gamely prevailed. SHORTMAN raced up close three then two wide on the first turn, moved up to challenge in the middle stages, kept the pressure on FATHER DELAY around the far turn, fought head to head down the lane, got floated out and brushed by FATHER DELAY at the sixteenth pole, kept on gamely to the wire but could not get by. KING APOLLO stalked two then three wide early, chased after the top pair three then four wide on the far turn, lugged in at the eighth pole still in close pursuit of the dueling leaders but could not summon the needed late kick to get by. SAQEEL bobbled leaving the gate, sat off the pace along the rail then moved into the two path, came back to the inside on the backstretch, steered out around the bend and spun five wide into the lane but had little left for the stretch run. SBAGLIATO dropped off the pace three then four wide, rounded the far turn in the two path and failed to menace. SILENT HEAT also dropped off the pace while taking the first turn four then five wide, trailed up the backstretch, saved ground on the second bend and was never a factor. THERE WAS A STEWARDS' INQUIRY INVOLVING THE STRETCH RUN BETWEEN THE TOP TWO FINISHERS. FOLLOWING A REVIEW, THE STEWARDS RULED THAT THE CONTACT BETWEEN FATHER DELAY AND SHORTMAN WAS MUTUEL AND THERE WOULD BE NO CHANGE.
