OUTER SUNSET stalked the top pair from outside, bid three deep on the turn, cleared inner rivals in upper stretch, met the bid from ROMAN EMPRESS with a furlong remaining, drifted out a bit at the sixteenth pole and held gamely. ROMAN EMPRESS raced in range up the backstretch, moved to the rail early on the turn then eased back to the two path, angled four to five wide coming into the stretch, confronted OUTER SUNSET at the eighth pole, got floated out slightly at the sixteenth pole and could not get by. DALLAS ALICE broke fast to take the front then dueled outside GETAWAY CHARM up the backstretch, pressed that rival into the turn, vied between rivals around the bend, led briefly into the stretch, lost command at the top of the lane, flattened in the furlong grounds but was able to save third. CHOLLIMA chased from off the pace, shifted out approaching the turn, went three wide around the bend, angled five wide nearing the stretch, drifted inward through the lane and never threatened while earning a minor award. GETAWAY CHARM chased briefly then moved up to challenge DALLAS ALICE from inside, inched ahead leaving the backstretch, fought inside a pair of rivals on the turn, lost the advantage late on the bend and weakened in the drive. POINT AND SHOOT trailed three wide into the turn, came two wide into the stretch and was never a factor. THE RIDER ABOARD ROMAN EMPRESS LODGED AN OBJECTION AGAINST THE RIDER OF OUTER SUNSET FOR ALLEGED INTERFERENCE LATE IN THE STRETCH RUN. FOLLOWING A REVIEW, THE STEWARDS RULED IN A MAJORITY DECISION THAT ALTHOUGH OUTER SUNSET DID DRIFT OUT LATE, THE INCIDENT DID NOT WARRANT A DISQUALIFICATION AND NO CHANGE WOULD BE MADE.
