DR. VENKMAN stalked the top pair up the backstretch, challenged from inside with a quarter mile remaining, put a head in front entering the lane, showed the way under right handed urging into deep stretch and held gamely over STRONGHOLD and EXPRESS TRAIN late. STRONGHOLD popped the gate open but did not leave the stall, followed in range outside a pair of rivals early, went three wide into the turn, exited the bend in the five path, closed in and drew alongside DR. VENKMAN late but failed to get by. EXPRESS TRAIN settled out of range well off the inside, traveled four wide into the turn, chased outside STRONGHOLD in the six path coming into the stretch, rallied in tandem with that rival and finished gamely for the show honors. MAYMUN dueled outside SPEED BOAT BEACH in the early going, fought three then four wide around the bend, drifted inward while failing to match strides with DR. VENKMAN in the final furlong and stayed on to the wire. SPEED BOAT BEACH dueled inside MAYMUN for command up the backstretch, maintained a short lead over that rival on the turn in the two path, fought with rivals on both sides late on the bend, relinquished the lead while in the three path entering the lane, got floated in by MAYMUN past the eighth pole and weakened in the late stages. SPIRIT OF MAKENA broke through the gate, brough back around and reloaded, track the dueling leaders outside DR. VENKMAN early, sustained an injury approaching the three-eighths pole, unseated the rider and was transported off the track via equine ambulance.
