Chart notes
WASHINGTON'S UNION followed in range from the two path, moved out leaving the clubhouse turn, bid three deep with three furlongs remaining, put ahead in front past the five-sixteenths pole, kicked clear from SMASH approaching the stretch, confronted by that rival again in the lane and held well. SMASH floated out slightly at the start, stalked three then two wide around the first turn, bid between rivals early on the far turn, led briefly midway around the bend before being overtaken by WASHINGTON'S UNION, lost touch with that past the quarter pole, fought back through the lane but lacked the needed late punch. SAILOR'S CHANCE also got floated out slightly leaving the gate, trailed three then two wide around the clubhouse turn, raced on the inside into the far turn, eased off the rail a bit around the bend, swung out late on the bend and into the stretch, showed a mild response to gain third but needed to find more to threaten the top pair. MAGICAL MONARCH broke out then went to the front, showed the way up the backstretch, challenged by outer pair at the three-eighths pole, lost command near the five-sixteenths marker and folded.
