Chart notes
CHRISTA MCAULIFFE broke well then took a stalking position behind the top pair, bid three deep at the quarter pole, seized control into the stretch and powered away. JOYFUL MISCHIEF bothered shortly after the start, dropped off the pace and moved inside, saved ground through the turn, angled out in upper stretch and ran on for second. ZADRA dueled from inside, fought with outer pair at the quarter pole, yielded in upper stretch, switched off the fence at the quarter pole and churned on for third. VERY SMART fought for the lead from outside, held a short advantage over rivals on both sides at the quarter pole, lost command turning for home, yielded in upper stretch and faded in the furlong grounds. NEVER IN DOUBT came in and had to steady in the beginning, lagged behind and passed a tired rival. FLORENCE JOYNER bobbled a bit leaving the gate, angled out and chased after the dueling leaders, took the turn three to four wide and came up empty in the lane.
