Chart notes
PIEDRA FRIA stalked the top trio up the backstretch, drew closer from inside on the turn, bid between rivals late on the bend, kicked clear in upper stretch and was kept to task through the final furlong. SMASHING MACHINE chased the leaders from out of range, rounded the turn two wide then found the rail, rallied into second midstretch and held position over MICHAEL late. MICHAEL unhurried in the opening stages, saved ground through the turn, steered out widest in the lane, put in a mild rally but could not get by SMASHING MACHINE for second. FUZZY STARE attended the pace outside the top pair to the turn, got floated to the four path leaving the bend and flattened out in the drive. SEMPER STRONG lacked early speed, raced along the fence on the turn and passed tired rivals down the lane. SCORCHING HOT showed the way inside a pair of rivals, maintained command through the turn, came off the rail a bit turning for home, yielded to the winner shortly after, drifted out at the eighth pole and tired. RUNNING SPARTAN pressed SCORCHING HOT from between rivals, fought two then three wide on the turn, could not kick on with the leaders at the top of the lane and weakened through the drive.
