Chart notes
AMERICAN CITY broke sharply, was pressed early by SEAHOSS while always traveling well, left that rival behind midway on the far turn, then was taken on by INSIGNIS approaching the quarter pole, pulled clear of the rest with that one and dueled through the stretch, edged clear late under strong handling. INSIGNIS settled two-wide tracking the pair up front, responded when asked to go on from the seven-sixteenths marker, pulled even to challenge AMERICAN CITY for the lead at the top of the stretch, dueled to deep stretch, kept on well but had to settle for second best well clear of the third finisher. NAPOLEONIC CODE lagged well behind for the first half-mile, racing two to three wide, launched a bid from the three-furlong pole and ran on with some energy under steady handling and urging to gain the third spot well back of the top pair. JOEY'S LIGHTENING raced well behind the pace through the early stakes, but kept on one-paced racing long the rail through the later stages and passed several foes in the stretch. SEEHOSS pressed the pace two-wide to the half-mile pole, was overtaken after passing the three-furlong pole and unable to offer much in the late stages. GAME AND GORMLEY went three wide through the first turn, made a mild advance on the backstretch to be with striking distance of the leaders midway on the far turn, loomed three wide passing the quarter pole but stopped in the stretch. BET AGAIN was being pushed for a forward position from the break, was close up midway down the backstretch, then started to backpedal, took a bad step at the top of the stretch, was pulled up, vetted, and transported off the track in the equine ambulance. AFFIRM CHIEF dwelt at the start, and was left behind at the break, jogged to the backstretch chute to clear the course, did not finish.
