Chart notes
SUMMER SPLASH broke well and was pushed to get forward position from the start, tracked two-wide between horses to the turn, then launched a bid from the three-furlong pole, swung four-wide into the stretch, briefly did battle with a game THREEFIFTYSEVEN, then edged clear in the final yards. DERBY DATE settled between horses in the second flight in the run down the backstretch, made a strong move from the seven-sixteenths marker to reach contention near the quarter pole, gradually narrowed the gap down the stretch but ran out of time. THREEFIFTYSEVEN broke well, pressed just off the flank of KICK IT AGAIN BOB down the backstretch, ranged up near the quarter pole to wrest the lead from that one, opened up some in upper stretch, finished well under urging but was outfinished in the final furlong. MY WIFE IS RIGHT broke outward and bumped with DEL MOON, then raced near the back of the main pack, started a three-wide bid from the three-furlong pole, and produced a grinding finish to improve. ROYALLY was in tight shortly after the start, then tracked four to five wide throughout, ran on some late but was never a serious threat. MOR BIG LEE settled in the back half of the field through the early running and was mildly gaining some in the stretch. AFFECTIONTO AUTISM got a good break and tracked the three-wide pace in the second flight, was under a drive from the five-sixteenths marker and flattened out in the stretch. LOVE CANDY came away awkwardly from the gate, dropped well behind the rest early, ran on some in the stretch but was otherwise never a factor. KICK IT AGAIN BOB was sent to the lead from the start, set a pressured pace to the turn, then folded easily when challenged by THREEFIFTYSEVEN near the quarter pole and had nothing left for the stretch run. DEL MOON took a light bump from MY WIFE IS RIGHT, raced in mid-pack down the backstretch, then was overtaken early on the turn and unable to keep up in the late stages. IT MAKES SENSE was under some coaxing early but unable to contest the pace, started a steady retreat midway on the turn, and had nothing to offer in the stretch.
