Chart notes
U. S. ARMY got shuffled back at the start, then was unhurried early on, settled at the back through the first half, advanced to be closer down the backstretch, then launched a bid in earnest from the three-furlong pole, dueled with CREATIVE MINISTER into the stretch, went clear in upper stretch, and finished strong under steady handling. CREATIVE MINISTER was allowed to settle from the start, moved over to the rail when clear, settled well behind the pace, hooked in with U.S. ARMY near the three-furlong pole, then weakened in the stretch but was able to hold second. VICTORY FOR VETS tracked four-wide down the backstretch, launched a bid approaching the three-furlong pole, had a brief lead passing the five-sixteenths marker before being overtaken by a pair of rivals in the stretch. TOO MUCH ACTION was held up off the pace to the inside under a strong hold, was asked to go on from the seven-sixteenths marker, swung four wide into the stretch, raced on the left lead, and faltered. J. P. RACE was rank through the first turn, then pulled to be just off the leader with the rider doing his best to temper the pace, was let loose on the far turn but unable to quicken and was not involved in the late stages. REDLINE hustled from the break, made the lead midway through the first turn, and led the field down the backstretch, surrendered the lead under pressure near the five-sixteenths pole, and tired in the stretch.
