Chart notes
VALID CONNECTION raced close up to the early pace while inside of runners, was caught in tight and shuffled back entering the first turn, shifted off of the rail and tracked the modest pace while widest up the backstretch, made a four wide bid to the far turn, confronted MARAVICH at the quarter marker and battled that rival into the lane, turned away the runner-up into the final sixteenth and edged clear late to prove best. MARAVICH hustled for the early lead, crossed over and put inner rivals in tight into the first turn, ceded the front into the backstretch and stalked two wide to the far turn, bid between rivals nearing the quarter marker then was confronted by VALID CONNECTION at that station, battled into the stretch, could not match strides with the winner into the final sixteenth and was a clear second. BLAKELY'S BOY unhurried to the first turn, saved ground into the backstretch run, angled off of the rail into the second turn then swung widest for the stretch drive, could not muster a final response and was clear in the end for third. EL ADIVINO was close up to the early pace while between rivals, checked while in tight and was shuffled back into the first turn, recovered to track the modest pace three to four wide along the backstretch, chased to the far turn, could not find more into upper stretch and weakened in the drive. PREDECESSOR was forwardly placed early on while between runners, avoided trouble into the first turn then disputed the pace into the backstretch, took command and set a modest pace to the half-mile marker, showed the way to the far turn then was overtaken nearing the quarter pole and tired in the stretch drive. THE STEWARDS CONDUCTED AN INQUIRY INTO THE RUNNING ALONG THE FIRST TURN. THE STEWARDS RULED THERE WOULD BE NO CHANGE.
